Has love saved Robin Roberts?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Robin Roberts has been an anchor on ABC’s Good Morning America for almost ten years.  I have admired her for the way she has walked her very difficult journey with cancer, and the way she spoke of her faith in God.  I had hoped that the rumors about her sexuality were not true, but they were.

People Magazine recently featured Robin on their cover with the headline, “How Love Saved Me: The Family, Friends & Relationship That Gave Her Strength.”  I wish the “relationship” she was referring to was her relationship with God.  Instead, she wanted to talk about her relationship with her long-time partner, Amber Laign.

It seems that homosexuality is the new trend of the day.  It is popular and common for shows and movies to feature characters who are overtly gay.  Homosexuality as a birthright is being taught as the newest civil rights issue.

Robin Roberts said that Barack Obama gave her chills by supporting gay marriage in an interview with her in 2012.  Roberts said, “I’m getting chills again.  When you’re sitting in that room and you hear him say those historic words, it was not lost on anyone that was in the room.” It would seem that our culture has settled the issue and that the current majority hold the definitive viewpoint.

In the People Magazine interview, Roberts talked about an earlier conversation with her mom.  Her mom had said, “You are my child, and you’re a child of God, and I love you. . . . God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.”

God does love her because of who he is, regardless of what she does or doesn’t do.  1 John 4:8 tells us, “God is love.”  God loved her so much he sent his Son to die for each and every sin.  I’m sure her mom loved her deeply and trusted that she was a child of God.   I honestly hope that Robin has placed her faith in Jesus as her Lord.  I just wish that she, Barack Obama and so many others understood that it is because God loves his children, he gave us his word to guide us.  It is because God loves us, he disciplines those things in our lives that are destructive.  He wants us to have what is best.

How does same-sex marriage affect you by Jim DenisonGod’s love for his children is not the same thing as God’s acceptance of their sins.  What do we say to people who talk about homosexuality as if it were acceptable to God?  If you haven’t read Jim’s papers on the subject, they are great and well thought out resources.

I want to encourage all of us, once again to align our opinions with God’s word.  Our culture is making wrong choices because they respect and like the people who are offering those choices.  The media is not usually interested in showing Christian kindness.  The angry, shouting believer makes for a better video.  There has never been a more important time for Christians to bear the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit. That fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Our culture is engaged in a war right now and God’s soldiers are too often fighting with the wrong weapons.  As I mentioned in an earlier blog, my new motto is from Eric Metaxas:  “Speak the truth in love – or shut up.”  I have to admit, those words have hushed me several times since I heard them.

Has love saved Robin Roberts?  I hope so.  I hope that at some moment in her life she accepted the grace that God offered her in Jesus Christ.  I hope that she placed her trust in his sacrifice for her sins and asked him to be Lord of her life.  But, if she did ask Jesus to be Lord, she needs to submit to his teaching, as all of us need to.  Jesus didn’t die on the cross to make homosexuality, or any other sin acceptable, he died to make every sin forgivable.

I hope the love of Jesus has saved Robin Roberts.  I hope that she will one day allow him to be her Lord and submit to his word.  A lot of people are listening to the world’s opinions today as opposed to God’s word.  Will you pray that Robin Roberts, our president and many others would seek the true God who loves – and wants only his best for his creation?
