Angels in the fast lane

There is no “fa la la” on the freeway.  Have you noticed the Christmas traffic?  There are too many people on the freeway, who have too much to do and too much angst with which they are doing it.  This blog is written to the person driving the white SUV, too fast, too recklessly and with malicious intent to whoever was in the lane they wanted.  (This morning that was ME!)  Where is your Christmas spirit?  Where is the joy of the season?  Where were you going??  The only excuse for your driving this morning would be an emergency.  And considering where you pulled in…I don’t think the apple fritters at Dunkin Donuts should warrant the quick lane change with no blinker!

Today is December 1st.  Everyone has 24 days to shop, bake, address Christmas cards and put up decorations.  Slow down, enjoy the day, play some Christmas carols and rejoice in the “reason for the season.”  I wanted to honk at the driver of the SUV…and not because he had a bumper sticker that read “honk if you love Jesus!”  My next thought was this…what if that driver was my good friend (I have some that drive like that), what if that driver was my son (I’m sure they have NEVER EVER driven like that), and then I thought, “what if that driver was an angel.”

Psalm 91:11 reads, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”  What if that SUV cut me off for a reason, something besides an apple fritter?  I don’t really think he was an angel, but thinking it possible changed my attitude immediately.

Billy Graham has the best book on the subject of angels.  The title is easy to remember too.  It is Angels. In his book he writes, “I believe in angels because the Bible says there are angels; and I believe the Bible to be the true Word of God.”  That works for me!  I believe in angels although I am not certain I have ever been aware of one present with me.  I wish I could have witnessed the “great company of the heavenly host” that appeared with the angel to the shepherds the night of Jesus’ birth.  I can’t imagine what that moment looked like or sounded like as they praised God saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

It is December 1st and you have a lot to do.  Examine yourself as you sit behind the wheel of your car today.  The angels said that there would be peace on earth to those on whom his favor rests.  I hope all of you will find God’s favor today as you drive, work, speak to others and go about the long list of activities this day will likely include.  And a message to you Christians out there: Put a little “fa la la” on the freeway today!  You may glance over and see an angel in the fast lane next to you…cheering you on.
