A new prince for the royal family

Prince George Alexander Louis has no idea what lies ahead of him.  Reporters and paparazzi have been encamped for weeks, hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, in-laws, as well as the new royal baby.  He has been photographed for months, but he is only a few days old.  What is it about royalty that attracts such interest?

Cinderella is a great story, told and retold for every generation.  The handsome prince falls for the beautiful, albeit poor and downtrodden girl.  They are almost kept from their destiny – by the evil stepmother and the evil stepsisters.  In the end, Cinderella and true love triumph because of a glass slipper and a fairy godmother.  Their promise: happily ever after.  I love fairy tales – but truth is better than fiction.  If you are a Christian, you are royalty too.  Your promise: happily ever after.

Christians are members of an enormous royal family.  John wrote, “to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).  How often do you wake up and think about the fact you are royalty?  It might be easier to think that way if a butler brought you slippers and a hot cup of coffee.  A crumpet might taste pretty good too.  Okay…I just realized I have no idea what a crumpet is!  (Check out the link if you want to know.)

William and Harry wake up every morning knowing they are royalty and their entire day is different because of their family.  That same should be true of God’s royal children.  I want you to feel like royalty today – so consider this passage from Romans 8:  “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.  And by him we cry ‘Abba, Father.’  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Romans 8:14-17).

If you have received Jesus, you have been adopted by God the Father.  If you haven’t considered that fact for awhile – stop and ponder it.  Regular, average, plain ol’ you – are a child of the Creator of all there is and ever will be.  Are you feeling special yet?  There’s more.  You are an heir, a beneficiary of the largest will and testament ever written or bequeathed.  Think about Little Orphan Annie after her adoption by Daddy Warbucks – now multiply that by a zillion forevers and you are close to imagining your inheritance.  To be honest, I wish the verse stopped there.   We could just wear purple clothes, a sparkling tiara and announce our identity to the world.  Unfortunately, the author of Romans thought it necessary to include the small, two letter BOMB at this point.  “If.”  But don’t hang your tiara up quite yet.  You can still be a co-heir with Christ – if – you share in his sufferings.  We can’t share Christ’s inheritance if we don’t share in his ministry.  What does that mean?

Christ gave us that answer.  He said, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent” (Luke 4:43).  Jesus came to give his life for all of us and communicate that gospel message to the world.  What will you sacrifice today so that you have an opportunity to share the gospel with someone who needs salvation?

We have been promised a happily ever after because we are children of the King.  But our inheritance is held for us in heaven.  Prince William and Prince Harry know they represent the royal family – everywhere they go.  Harry has not always “represented” as well as he should – neither will we.  But – that doesn’t change the fact that “royalty” is our identity, and our job.

We are a royal family, with royal jobs to do.  Your “happily ever after” is coming – so put on the glass slippers, the tiaras and represent your family.  Heaven celebrates every royal birth too!
