Was this bride covered by the blood?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

You might have seen pictures of, or heard about the bride who tied her one-month old to the train of her wedding dress as she walked down the aisle.  This blog post isn’t meant to solicit opinions about the “wisdom” of that choice.  I don’t think the baby was in danger unless the photographer had not been notified.  There was, however, a great deal of media given to the choice and a great deal of social commentary as well.

Right/wrong, smart/dumb, abuse/poor judgment and every other possible opinion has been voiced.  The barrage of opinions prompted the bride to make a statement of her own.  Her statement is the reason I am writing this blog post.  The bride’s Facebook post read:

“People questioning what we do, commenting all negative, and just doing the most. We good though we covered by the Blood which never loose its power. So to the media, radio, news, and whomever else wanting to talk about what WE do here you go: Media Media I see how it works regardless the situation or purpose people gone have something negative to say! The answer is we do what we want when we want long as Jesus on our side everything worked out fine and gone continue to be fine. Our 1 month old was awake and well secured on my train. Most important while yall got ya feelings in us we had our hearts in Christ which covers all!!…”

I was an Elementary Education and English major in college and I write for a living.  So while I have some grammatical problems with this post, my biggest concern is the theology of her words.  Her Facebook post reflects a growing trend in our culture.  There are a lot of words theologians use, but the point is this: many Christians are using and claiming the “blood of Christ” in a casual, name it and claim it kind of way that belittles the Lord.  When I teach the third Commandment, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name (Exodus 20:7),” I like to point out that this verse is usually applied to using his name as a curse.  That Commandment means so much more than that.

The bride said that she was “covered by the Blood which never loose its power.”  If she is a Christian, she has been covered by the blood of Christ.  At the same time, the bride also said, “The answer is we do what we want when we want long as Jesus on our side everything worked out fine and gone continue to be fine.”  That is the phrase that I have to question.  If she is saying that the blood gives her permission to do what she wants to, when she wants to – and everything is all right because she is “covered by the blood” she has stepped into a dangerous theology.

Most of you reading this blog understand that.  All of us reading this blog have sinned, and abused the fact that we have been promised forgiveness.  Every now and again, it is worth remembering that when we knowingly sin, and claim “the blood of Christ” as our permission to sin, we have misused the name of the Lord, and broken the third Commandment.  He did not die to allow us to sin, he died to forgive our sin.

Here is the truth about being covered by the blood of Christ:

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”  Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.  For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect (1 Peter 1:15-19).

The blood of Christ is described as “precious.”  This story provided several cautions about the name and the blood of Christ.  The blood of Christ should govern our choices, make us holy and cause us to revere the Lord.  The blood of Christ should lead us from an empty, sin-filled life to a life that honors the name of Jesus.

We are faced with the choice to sin many times every day.  Think reverently about the precious blood of Jesus Christ and choose to be holy.  Our lives and our choices will be transformed, when we understand the value of the name and the blood of the perfect Lamb.
