“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). (The children of the sixties will be humming the song, Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds for the rest of the day!) I’ve finished my summer writing projects and I need a break. So, this will be my last blog post for a few weeks.
I love that God rested. I love that Jesus rested. I love that we have permission to do the same. The Bible talks about taking time for rest, quietness, restoration and refreshing. I want some time for all of those things.
So, I’m taking a summer break and will enjoy a little vacation time. I plan on reading a few good novels. (I’m open to suggestions – just hit the “join the conversation” button which will take you to the comment section…sorry about the previous mix-up with that.) I just finished John Grisham’s Camino Island, which had a few too many bad words for my taste—but told a great story. Earlier I read Francine Rivers, A Bridge to Haven. That was an excellent read! She is my favorite Christian author. Books are my favorite way to turn off my life and enter the lives of others. Authors like Francine Rivers inspire thoughts and ideas about the work of God in this world. I love that God uses the words of others to speak to me at times.
I’m planning to avoid my computer, my cell phone, and my iPad a little more often. Technology can be draining to the imagination. What would we spend time doing, if we didn’t spend so much time connected to a machine? What “stuff” would we create if we turned our brains over to the Creator?
Have you found time to rest this summer? The days are hot, long, and wonderfully free of holidays and other reasons to rush. In fact, here in Texas, rushing in 100-degree weather isn’t a great idea! I wonder if that is why God created the seasons. Our minds need change, activity, and challenges—but our minds also need rest. I imagine that is one of the reasons God gave us these long, lazy summer days.
